The team started in 1992 under the name of Non-Communicable Disease Research Group (NCD Research Group). At this stage, our activities were mainly centred on looking at the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension and diabetes in some developing countries. As the activities of the group evolved to include health system, health beliefs and health promotion research and as our collaboration with other groups with similar objectives within and outside the region, we decided in February 2000 to change the name of our group to Health of Populations in Transition (HoPiT) Research Group.
