In order to tackle the emerging health problem of NCDs in low and middle income countries we constituted a research group called HoPiT (Health of Populations in Transition Research Group) in collaboration with four other countries: France, South Africa, Tanzania and the United Kingdom. The programme developed was titled ‘Health of Populations in Transition’ that is being carried out in several stages. This new entity that was created in February 2000 replaced our former Non-communicable Disease Research Group. The main aim of HoPiT is to tackle the emerging NCD pandemic through action-research to provide evidence on the NCD, advocate and assist national governments in the development of a NCD policy and programme.
